Alimony and Spousal Maintenance

When a married couple has worked to build a certain lifestyle, courts generally require the higher earner to assist the lower earner with necessary expenses for at least some period following the divorce.  Alimony is money one spouse pays to the other for support, either during a divorce process or for some period of time after a divorce, or both.

Alimony can be temporary or permanent or can be in a lump sum or paid over a period of time.  There is no set formula for setting the amount of alimony; however, courts will look at a number of factors such as each spouse’s earning capacity, financial resources, age, physical, and emotional condition.

The attorneys at Shadrix, Lane & Parmer, P.C. help clients understand the factors the courts employ in arriving at an alimony amount and how those factors may apply to their unique situations.

If you need legal assistance regarding alimony, contact the law firm of Shadrix, Lane & Parmer, P.C. at 770-830-0809.
